Beautiful movie. Something in between Alexander Dumas's 'Count of Monte Cristo' and George Orwell's '1984'. Without the adventure of Count of Monte Cirsto and without the intensity of 1984. Has totalitarianism, thought control, injustice, revenge, anti-semitism, homophobia, 9/11 and Bush's policies all discussed in a single movie, but of course, all so indirectly.
So, is it jumbled up mix of too many themes? Absolutely. So, is the movie confusing? Not at all. It is a story of the same narrow-mindedness, opression and corruption that arises out of a single absolute worldview that must be enforced on everyone with the exception of some, in the same manner as Orwell said in Animal Farm, "All animals are equal, but some are more equal."
Its the story of every revolution in history. A small clique takes over the throne in the name of welfare of the people. It becomes corrupt and feels the need to use fear and opression to keep people under control to maintain its rule. Ironically, it is actually they themselves who are afraid. After seeing this oppression someone rises to the challenge and fearlessly goes against the tide, against the flow and against the norms. Refuses to conform. Refuses to comply. The momentum slowly builds up until it reaches a "tipping point", after which, its the same domino effect shown in the movie. The revolution takes place.
