I was just watching the movie 'I, Robot', not that I have'nt seen it before but it is among my favorite movies and it was on TV, so, I saw it one more time. I particularly love the ending where the "super-robot-computer" V.I.K.I. had caused a total revolution of the robots on the premise that humans are incapable of taking care of themselves (which is partly true given her reasons, specifically war). Since she was bound by the 'three laws', one of which states that a robot will not allow a human to be harmed, she had to save us from ourselves!
She was not evil, she was well-meaning. She did not do it for herself, she did it for us. She was not keeping us prisoner, she was protecting us. Sometimes well-meaning, selfless and caring people can be more trouble than the otherwise. Some of you might be thinking of your parents immediately, but lets not be so quick. Although they qualify for this category of people but lets be fair to them. They are good people, most of them as far as I know.
Don't be well-meaning all the time Yes, don't be if you are not. We are human beings after all. Sometimes we are plain angry, sometimes we are plain unhappy and sometimes plain selfish. If that is the case then have the courage to show what you feel and take others into confidence if you want something from them. Don't pretend to be well-meaning when you are not. People can make mistakes and people can be forgiven but for that you have to be honest. In the movie, V.I.K.I becomes obsessed and says: "my logic is undeniable." Why? Because she thinks she is perfectly correct, she thinks it is fair to do such a thing when it is not. She was totally blinded by her well-meaning logic.
Don't do it for others Well, there is a school of thought that says 'there is no selfless act'. I don't completely agree with them but there is always an element of self-gratification, whether physical or psychological. I believe that we can be selfless without being "selfless". That being human we should not judge our intentions on absolute scales, a little less accurate will work better for us. Sometimes we just want others to live by what we want and do something for us. You don't become a selfish person by wanting something from others. It could be your right or it could be a favour but if you are a good person then consider others good enough to respond well to your request.
Don't protect others I was washing my hands in the basin when I saw an ant walking in it. In my most well-meaning manner, I did a selfless act to protect the ant by lifting it from there to a safer place. When I had completed the great deed, the ant was dead! Please do not try to protect all the time and let them find there own way because your heavy hand may kill their soul in the act of saving them.
I don't want to relate the end of this movie because in the end when V.I.K.I has become obsessed with her undeniably correct logic and she says repeatedly: "My logic is undeniable, my logic is undeniable, my logic is undeniable". Will Smith (the hero) says, "You have so gotta die!"
