A discussion on open-mindedness -- continued

Immad says:
but by that argument, we should also be open to opposing ideas, to atleast give them a chance
Immad says:
otherwise, it just boils down to the monopoly of an idea
Raza says:
of course
Immad says:
a monopoly which doesn't let anyone else take over
Raza says:
exactly
Raza says:
but by giving a chance does not mean accepting
Raza says:
i dont know who said it, but i like this quote that, An A grade mind is that which can hold a contradicting
idea without accepting it
Immad says:
that is true. but for an idea to prove itself, it eventually has to be accepted by a large number in the population
Raza says:
eventually, yes
Raza says:
but numbers dont make anything true or false
Immad says:
but according to ur reasoning, numbers have a high correlation with something being true or false
Raza says:
:)
Raza says:
no, thats not my reasoning
Raza says:
dont distill my reasoning
Immad says:
i mean an idea surviving through history would need a lot of carriers!
Raza says:
yes it does
Raza says:
but span that over a time
Raza says:
with a lot of opposition throughout that time
Raza says:
and dont freeze an instant to watch the numbers
Raza says:
a flash number wont tell u if an idea is true or false
Raza says:
large number of people can be mislead
Raza says:
because most dont question everything
Raza says:
but over time
Raza says:
enough questioning people are born
Raza says:
that they give every idea a tough time
Immad says:
that makes sense.
Immad says:
this makes me wonder, is atheism a relatively recent phenomena?
Immad says:
if it is, we might have to wait several 100 years to see where it goes
Raza says:
atheism is an age old idea
Raza says:
as old as the idea that there is a God
Raza says:
but like a democracy marginalizes extremism
Raza says:
this idea was marginalized as well
Raza says:
now it lives with its own religious zealots, who would say against all intuitive evidence, if not
demonstrable, that there is no God
Raza says:
and they say, since as long as i can find any reasoning, though how convoluted, i will stay on this path and not reconsider genuinely
Immad says:
that is true.
Immad says:
though some of our beliefs might be reconsidered in the future. if, and when AI makes real headway, there might be a consensus that instead of being one God or no God, there might be several creators
who created us
Immad says:
that would be something interesting to see
Raza says:
:D
Raza says:
well Allah answers that in the Quran Himself
Raza says:
If there were more than one God, there would be Chaos in this universe
Immad says:
but what if only one 'God' owns our universe?
Immad says:
the other ones have their own
Raza says:
and this beautiful consistency and order could not have been achieved without a single mind with a single thought
Raza says:
:D
Raza says:
that was good one
Immad says:
that argument has intuitive appeal. but it doesn't rule out the existence of other Gods
Raza says:
but in that case, it should suffice for us that, for us, there is just one God
Raza says:
and thats what we believe in
Immad says:
that is true.
Immad says:
and that God likes us to believe that there is no one other than Him
Immad says:
i might be crossing the line here
Raza says:
:D
Raza says:
if He wants that, its ok for Him
Raza says:
at least, only He would be judging us
Immad says:
that is true
Raza says:
but can, if there were many gods, the gods survive themselves, because they all are powerful and all
think
Raza says:
how come they never interfere with each other and cause chaos?
Immad says:
for one thing, we are still surviving. and it might be that our 'universe' has been running for a finite time. and some day our universe might shut down because of some 'heavenly' conflict among the Gods
Raza says:
:D
Immad says:
u can imagine creating a universe on ur computer. and it would keep on running (unless USA decides to raid Pakistan )
Raza says:
yeah
Immad says:
at the end of the idea, its just a matter of belief. till now, its mostly been about one God or no God. though with the advancement of technology, our fundamental beliefs might show interesting shifts and changes
Immad says:
lets see how these ideas survive the next evolutionary storm
Raza says:
we might not live to see everything
Raza says:
its not just about belief in the end, its about the point from where we dont have any answers and the field is open for all reasonable suggestions, of which, you would choose to believe in
Raza says:
otherwise everything would become a matter of belief and we will be back to square one
Raza says:
with anyone believing anything
Immad says:
hmm...true
Immad says:
so our belief appears to be the most reasonable thing to belief in at the moment
Raza says:
you could say that
Raza says:
the God fact, my guess is that, will never be KNOWN. So this belief would have to live till the end of the time
Immad says:
but the idea of multiple Gods might take on popularity. but similar to our reasoning above, ppl would choose to believe in one God and whatever he says
Immad says:
so yes, i tihnk u r right about that.
Immad says:
it would be nice to make artificial bots muslims
Raza says:
:D
Immad says:
i better be going for prayers now as my roommate is waiting for me
Raza says:
alright, go and remember your one God
Raza says:
and pray that he lets people in on some important secrets
Immad says:
sure will
Immad says:
it was great talking to u. till next time then.
Raza says:
alright
Raza says:
this discussion might be posted on my blog
Raza says:
so dont claim any copyrights
Immad says:
u have my permission

Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves, therefore all progress depends on unreasonable people.
